Hubbard sets program record with 10 3s, scores 46 as Mississippi State edges Auburn
Josh Hubbard scored a career-high 46 points and set a program record with 10 three-pointers to lead Mississippi State to a 91-85 win over Auburn on Wednesday night.
The 6-foot junior made nine of 12 shots from beyond the arc in the first half, helping the Bulldogs build a 16-point lead at intermission. Hubbard’s 35 points before halftime broke the previous team record of eight three-pointers, a mark he had tied six times before surpassing it.
Hubbard also set a Mississippi State record for points in an SEC game, surpassing Bailey Howell’s 45 points scored against LSU in 1958. Howell’s career high in points is 47, set against Union in 1958.
Auburn, which has lost five consecutive games, was led by Keyshawn Hall with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Tahaad Pettiford added 21 points, and Kevin Overton scored 15 for the Tigers.
The game saw a back-and-forth finish. Hubbard made a layup with 1:11 remaining, and after Hall hit one of two free throws, Hubbard knocked down a corner three to give Mississippi State an 85-83 lead with 27 seconds left. Auburn’s Achor Achor blocked consecutive shots by Hall, and Jamarion Davis-Fleming made two free throws before blocking a layup attempt by Overton with 14 seconds remaining. KeShawn Murphy’s putback of his own miss gave Auburn its first lead at 64-63 with 8:50 to play.
Mississippi State opened the game strong, jumping to a 21-6 lead about eight minutes in, with Hubbard scoring 13 points, including three straight three-pointers during the run.
