Jackson VA hospital to undergo major upgrades with federal funding

The G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson is set to undergo significant upgrades, officials announced Thursday. The project aims to improve patient safety and efficiency through various infrastructure enhancements.

The upgrades will include converting a primary care clinic into a modern women’s health center and improving the interventional radiology department. Additional work involves upgrading electronic health records, renovating the hospital’s kitchen, and maintaining restrooms across the facility. No timeline has been provided for the projects’ start or completion, according to VA officials.

Executive Director Michael Renfrow said the improvements will help provide better care for veterans. “Improved facilities, equipment, and infrastructure mean better care for Veterans, and these funds will enable the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center to achieve that goal,” he said.

The projects are part of a record $4.8 billion in nationwide VA spending to modernize and repair healthcare facilities. It is the largest single-year investment through the federal government’s Non-Recurring Maintenance program. VA Secretary Doug Collins emphasized the importance of the funding, stating, “Under President Trump, VA is putting Veterans first, and this historic investment underscores that fact.”

The Jackson medical center provides comprehensive mental health, surgical, and long-term care to more than 50,000 veterans annually, serving service members and retired armed forces members across more than 80% of Mississippi, as well as parts of Alabama and Louisiana.
