LSU beats Ole Miss 106-99 in double overtime

LSU rallied to beat Ole Miss 106-99 in double overtime on Tuesday at Oxford, Miss., handing the Rebels their 10th straight loss, according to the box score. The victory gave LSU a 14-14 overall record and a 3-12 mark in the Southeastern Conference; Ole Miss fell to 11-17 and 3-12, the schools reported.

The Tigers were led by Max Mackinnon, who scored 34 points, and Mississippi State transfer Michael Nwoko added 18, according to the box score. Ole Miss had four players reach double figures, paced by Ilias Kamaerdine with 26 points; Malik Dia scored 20, AJ Storr had 19 and Eduardo Klafke finished with 16.

Ole Miss held an eight-point lead late in regulation but could not hold on. The teams exchanged baskets down the stretch and the game was tied 80-80 after a Klafke lob to Corey Chest in the final minute sent the game to overtime, the box score shows. Nwoko fouled out late in the second half and missed overtime. Storr missed a potential game-winner at the first overtime buzzer, and in the second overtime a Mackinnon 3-point play with 3:49 left gave LSU its first lead since early in the game; the Tigers closed on an 11-7 run to finish it.

Ole Miss coach Chris Beard said after the game, “It wasn’t two bad teams playing tonight. It was two teams with a lot of adversity, and a lot of games played in the Southeastern Conference. Something had to break for one of them. We had a couple of dumb fouls at the end of the game, and again, we had the ball in our hands with two chances tonight, and we didn’t get it done.”

Shooting from long range proved decisive. LSU made 52% of its 3-pointers and scored 33 points from long distance, while Ole Miss had 15 points from 3-point range, according to the box score. The Rebels did win the turnover battle, forcing six LSU turnovers and scoring 22 points off turnovers, the official statistics show.

Ole Miss will play at Auburn on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CT. The SEC Network and participating SuperTalk Mississippi stations will carry the broadcast, according to the game release.
