Mississippi Department of Education releases updated K-12 strategic plan

The Mississippi Department of Education announced Thursday that the Mississippi State Board of Education has approved an updated strategic plan for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The plan, titled “Mississippi Strategic Plan for Pre-K through Grade 12 Education,” aims to incorporate new priorities while building on recent academic achievements.

Dr. Lance Evans, the state superintendent of education, credited Mississippi students for earning national recognition for their progress over the past decade. He said high expectations, strong instruction, and a focus on equity have contributed to improved outcomes.

Evans emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration among educators, families, community partners, and policymakers. He noted that the new plan builds upon existing momentum and calls for continued dedication to student success.

According to the department, the plan was developed after gathering input from about 100 Mississippians through surveys and focus groups last fall. Participants included students, teachers, principals, superintendents, legislative representatives, business leaders, and representatives from community colleges and universities.

The updated plan maintains core priorities from the original, with a new goal focused on whole child support. It seeks to promote consistent attendance, integrate technology and career learning from pre-K through grade 12, develop school and district leaders, and support low-performing schools and districts.

The full strategic plan is available for review on the Mississippi Department of Education’s website.
