Mississippi Governor Signs SHIELD Act Imposing Voter Citizenship Checks
Mississippi’s governor signed the SHIELD Act into law, instituting checks of voters’ citizenship status, the Mississippi Free Press reported.
The measure enacts procedures to verify whether voters are U.S. citizens, the report said.
The law makes Mississippi one of several states to adopt such measures, which the Mississippi Free Press said align with a push by President Donald Trump to pursue noncitizen voting.
Critics told the Mississippi Free Press the laws will create unnecessary barriers to voting. The report first appeared on the Mississippi Free Press.
