Mississippi lawmakers agree to $2,000 teacher raise; bill heads to governor
Mississippi lawmakers agreed to give teachers and other educators a $2,000 raise, and the bill now awaits Gov. Tate Reeves’ consideration, Mississippi Today reported.
The agreement followed months of back-and-forth. The Senate had proposed a $6,000 raise spread over three years, while the House proposed a one-time $5,000 increase, Mississippi Today said.
Some teachers told Mississippi Today they were disappointed with the final figure and said educators “desperately need” more, the report said.
Mississippi Explained, a weekly news quiz produced by Mississippi Today, asked readers when Mississippi teachers last received a pay raise. Readers were invited to email answers to newsletter@mississippitoday.org with their first name and last initial to be mentioned in the next quiz, the organization said.
Last week’s answer was that a two-thirds majority vote in both chambers is required. Winners listed by Mississippi Today were Susie B., Billy D. and Ermea R. The outlet encouraged readers to sign up for The Today newsletter to take more quizzes.
