Mississippi lawmakers say school choice, prison health care reform likely dead as committee deadline nears
The deadline for committees to pass general bills from the other chamber is Tuesday, according to the Mississippi Legislature’s schedule.
Some lawmakers, including Rep. Rob Roberson and Sen. Lydia Chassaniol, said they are unlikely to call another committee meeting before the deadline, a move they said would likely kill proposed school choice and prison health care reform.
Mississippi Today introduced the weekly “Mississippi Explained” news quiz to test readers’ knowledge and asked: “Who decides which bills are brought up for a vote in committee?” The newsletter invited readers to email answers to newsletter@mississippitoday.org with a first name and last initial for a shout-out in the next quiz post on Monday, March 9, Mississippi Today said.
Mississippi Today listed last week’s answer as “Committee” and congratulated winners Jon A., John O. and Rita H. The newsletter also encouraged readers to subscribe to The Today, its daily email newsletter, to take more quizzes and follow state news, the publication said.
