Mississippi leaders react to President Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address
Mississippi political figures shared diverse opinions on President Donald Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address. Trump delivered his first official address of his second term Tuesday night, the longest in history. He highlighted achievements from his first year in office and drew distinctions between his administration and Congressional Democrats.
Congressman Bennie Thompson, a Democrat, criticized the speech, calling it a “circus performance” and accusing Trump of offering talking points instead of honesty. Thompson said families across the nation face struggles that contradict the president’s claims of economic strength and safety. He emphasized the need for continued Democratic engagement and accountability.
Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Republican, praised Trump’s focus on strengthening the country through issues like fair trade and election security. She expressed optimism about ongoing efforts to improve the economy and rural healthcare, stating that Republicans will continue working with the president to protect national interests.
State Rep. Cheikh Taylor, a Democrat and chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party, criticized Trump for what he called a failed policy record. Taylor accused the president of neglecting the affordability crisis affecting Mississippians and dismissed Trump’s leadership as ineffective. He added that Trump has shown no willingness to address the problems he has caused.
Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican, supported Trump’s emphasis on rebuilding the military and restoring peace through strength. Wicker backed the $1.5 trillion defense budget, citing national security priorities. Congressman Mike Ezell also praised the president’s focus on issues important to Mississippians, such as tax relief and border security.
Shad White, Mississippi’s state auditor, commended Trump’s speech as one of the most effective in modern history, highlighting stories of American heroism and criticizing Democrats’ stance on immigration enforcement. Attorney General Lynn Fitch also expressed appreciation for Trump’s efforts to make the American Dream more accessible, citing initiatives like lowering drug prices and supporting American-made products.
