Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson says he will not seek third term, hints at higher office

Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson announced Monday he will not seek a third term in 2027, sparking speculation that he may pursue higher office next year.

Watson, a Republican, made the remarks at the Stennis Institute’s Capitol Press Forum. He said he feels his duties at the secretary of state’s office are largely complete and expressed confidence in leaving the position better than he found it.

The 48-year-old, who represented Jackson County in the state Senate for three terms, was elected secretary of state in 2019 and was reelected in 2023. During his tenure, he has championed measures to ensure only U.S. citizens vote in Mississippi elections, strengthen campaign finance laws, and reduce business regulations.

Watson is the second statewide official to reveal plans beyond his current role. Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and Gov. Tate Reeves are term-limited and cannot run again. Meanwhile, State Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Andy Gipson has announced a run for governor next year.

The lieutenant governor holds significant influence over the legislative process, including appointing committee leaders and referring bills to specific committees.
