Mississippi Showcases Role in U.S. Military Modernization
Mississippi is at the forefront of defense innovation, according to U.S. Senator Roger Wicker. Wicker, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, emphasized the state’s role during recent events across Mississippi that showcase its contributions to national security.
In Oxford, the National Center for Narrative Intelligence hosted its annual cognitive warfare summit, attracting an international audience. Military officials, researchers, and private industry representatives discussed how artificial intelligence and other emerging tools can help understand adversaries’ propaganda efforts.
The senator also visited Firehawk Aerospace in Crawford, where the company recently opened a new facility. Firehawk manufactures advanced solid rocket motors and propellants for munitions, which are designed to be more cost-effective and faster to produce. The new facility is expected to create about 100 jobs initially.
Further south in Gulfport, Integer Technologies launched a new site focused on developing software for unmanned systems. The company plans to collaborate with the University of Southern Mississippi to develop autonomous maritime vessels capable of operating both underwater and on the water, representing a step forward in modern battlefield technology.
Wicker described Mississippi as a “multi-domain” state, leading in sea, air, cyber, and information warfare, and playing a key role in munitions and autonomous systems development. The senator highlighted how these advancements are creating jobs and helping to reindustrialize the region.
The push for increased defense investment aligns with President Donald Trump’s recent budget proposal, which requests $1.5 trillion for the upcoming fiscal year. Wicker supports the plan, noting that the 50% increase is necessary to rebuild military strength and industrial capacity in the face of threats from China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and narcotraffickers.
Wicker stressed that America’s defense industrial base needs strengthening and emphasized Mississippi’s role in this effort. He expressed his commitment to implementing the budget and investing in emerging defense manufacturers across the country.
