Mississippi singer Daniel Stallworth advances to ‘American Idol’ top 14 after surprise twist
A Mississippi singer made a surprising run to the top 14 on the current season of “American Idol” as a twist was revealed at the end of Monday night’s episode.
During the first live episode of season 24, titled “Songs of Faith,” Daniel Stallworth was announced as part of the top 14. The 27-year-old from Moss Point advanced from the top 20 after earning enough fan votes following his March 17 performance of Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long.”
In the next round, fans were tasked with eliminating two contestants in real time. Stallworth performed “Brighter Days” by Blessing Offor, impressing the judges with his energetic delivery. Lionel Richie praised Stallworth’s storytelling ability, saying, “You have the ability to tell a story and then move the crowd. That was a great performance.” Fellow judge Luke Bryan added, “You got me in the spirit. Keep growing.”
Judge Carrie Underwood, now in her second season on the show, predicted Stallworth’s performance would be enough to avoid elimination. “I feel like we’re watching you get into a more comfortable, fun space,” she said. “I love that you picked an up-tempo song. That’s going to differentiate you tonight.”
However, the results were not announced immediately. Host Ryan Seacrest revealed that, due to the unprecedented number of votes cast through traditional and social media platforms, the results would be announced next week to ensure accuracy. “Tens of millions of votes” were received, Seacrest said, with social voting now integrated into the competition for the first time, allowing fans to vote via Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok comments.
Stallworth’s advancement marked the fourth Mississippian in four seasons to reach the top 14. Previous Mississippians include Monroe County’s Colin Stough and Zachariah Smith, who both made it to the top 5 of season 21, and Meridian’s Jamal Roberts, who won the competition in season 23.
“American Idol” will return with the top 12 on Monday, April 6, at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC.
