Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Southern Miss rebound with conference series wins
Three Mississippi college baseball programs rebounded this weekend, with No. 6 Mississippi State, Ole Miss and No. 12 Southern Miss each winning conference series, the schools reported.
Mississippi State (20-4, 4-2 SEC) swept Vanderbilt, winning 4-2 on Friday, 7-2 on Saturday and 17-7 in a shortened game on Sunday, the school said. Designated hitter Noah Sullivan had seven hits, a home run and four RBIs, and catcher Kevin Milewski had three hits, two home runs and five RBIs, the school said. Jack Gleason (2-0) earned Friday’s win after relieving Ryan McPherson, who exited with an injury, Tomas Valincius (5-0) struck out 14 in seven innings on Saturday, and Duke Stone (4-0) was credited with Sunday’s victory, the school added.
Ole Miss (19-6, 3-3 SEC) won a home series against No. 15 Kentucky, taking a 5-0 victory on Thursday, dropping a 3-1 game on Friday and edging Kentucky 12-9 on Saturday, the university said. Daniel Pacella hit a grand slam in the fourth inning of the finale, and Tristan Bissetta finished the series with three hits, two homers and four RBIs, the school reported. Will Furniss had four hits, a home run and three RBIs for Ole Miss. Hunter Elliott (3-0) started Thursday’s shutout, Walker Hooks (1-0) won Sunday’s game in 4 2/5 innings, and Hudson Calhoun took the loss after filling in for an injured Cade Townsend, the university said.
Southern Miss (19-5, 3-3 Sun Belt) rallied to win its first home conference series, losing 6-5 on Friday, routing Troy 11-5 on Saturday and scoring five unanswered runs for a 5-4 win on Sunday, the school said. Left fielder Davis Gillespie had five hits, two homers and three RBIs, and second baseman Kyle Morrison had four hits, two homers and three RBIs, according to the school. Grayden Harris (4-1) took the Friday loss, and relievers Kros Sivley (3-0) and Camden Clark (4-0) earned wins on Saturday and Sunday, the school said.
The teams announced a busy week ahead. Mississippi State will host Southern Miss on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT before traveling to Oxford to play Ole Miss this weekend, Ole Miss will visit Memphis on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT before hosting Mississippi State, and Southern Miss will welcome Appalachian State over the weekend after the midweek game with Mississippi State, the schools said.
