Mississippi teachers’ pay raises face scrutiny amid budget concerns

Mississippi lawmakers are divided over proposals for significant teacher pay raises, even as state budget challenges loom. The Mississippi House has approved a $5,000 increase in a single year, while the Senate proposed a $6,000 raise spread over three years, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

Additional increases for special education teachers and assistants have also been discussed. The proposed raises could cost around $200 million annually, plus an extra $30 to $40 million for Public Employees’ Retirement System contributions, sources said. These figures come amid other competing budget needs, including Medicaid funding requests and pension shortfalls.

Despite the debate, data from the Mississippi Department of Education shows that the number of teachers has slightly increased over the past decade, even as the student population has decreased by nearly 60,000. Over the same period, average teacher pay has risen by more than $11,000, and per-pupil funding has increased by approximately $5,100.

Analysts note that Mississippi teachers earn more than peers with similar education levels in the state, with average salaries around $55,000, including benefits. Teachers also work fewer days annually than many private-sector employees, with a typical 187-day contract compared to roughly 247 workdays for private workers.

Experts caution that across-the-board raises may not be the most effective solution to teacher shortages. Instead, they recommend targeted incentives and careful analysis of actual staffing needs, emphasizing that compensation should reflect job complexity and market conditions. As discussions continue, legislators are urged to consider the broader fiscal landscape and data-driven strategies.
