Mississippi wildfire burns 3,000 acres in Carroll County
State officials are assessing a wildfire in Carroll County, Mississippi. Gov. Tate Reeves said Saturday morning that the fire has scorched about 3,000 acres and is 40% contained.
The cause and origin of the blaze have not been determined, and no injuries or deaths have been reported, Reeves said.
The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for Carroll County and surrounding areas, citing dry air and moderate winds that could lead to additional fires, according to the governor.
Evacuations are underway, with emergency response crews assisting residents in leaving the area. Reeves noted that the Mississippi Forestry Commission, Carroll County Fire Services, and MEMA are involved in the response. Several roads, including Roads 218, 144, and 163, have been evacuated, and more could be closed if necessary.
Firefighters are working to contain the fire, deploying firebreaks around inhabited areas and utilizing a helicopter. Reeves said the state would continue to send additional resources as needed.
Currently, 12 Mississippi counties are under a burn ban, including Carroll and neighboring Grenada, according to the Mississippi Forestry Commission. Reeves urged residents to pray for the firefighters and emergency responders battling the wildfire.
