Mississippi’s Daniel Stallworth advances to ‘American Idol’ top 11 after surviving double elimination
Daniel Stallworth, a 27-year-old elementary school teacher from Moss Point, Mississippi, survived two elimination rounds Monday night on “American Idol” to advance to the top 11. The show initially announced Stallworth as part of the top 12 after an unprecedented number of votes delayed the official count last week, according to producers.
During the episode, fans were asked to vote again as contestants performed in the annual “Judges’ Song Contest.” Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan secretly selected songs for the contestants to sing. Stallworth chose “Can We Talk” by Tevin Campbell, “I Want You Back” by *NSYNC, and “It Ain’t Over ’Til It’s Over” by Lenny Kravitz. Despite admitting he was unfamiliar with Kravitz’s song, Stallworth performed it confidently, adding his own twist and taking control of the stage.
Underwood praised Stallworth’s willingness to step outside his comfort zone. Richie told him he had a strong vibe. Bryan said Stallworth’s performance showed he learned a lot and celebrated his song choice, which he said he personally liked. Stallworth’s performance resonated with viewers, earning enough votes to secure his spot in the top 11. Eliminated during the episode were Julian Kalel, Jake Thistle, and Jesse Findling. Richie was named the winner of the “Judges’ Song Contest,” earning a save used on Rae over Findling.
This marks the fourth consecutive season in which a Mississippian has advanced this far in the competition. Monroe County’s Colin Stough and Zachariah Smith both reached the top five in season 21, and Meridian’s Jamal Roberts won season 23.
“American Idol” season 24 will return April 13 at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC. The top 11 will perform iconic hits from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, with America voting for the top nine during the episode.
