Pirates debut teen shortstop Konnor Griffin shines in first game

Konnor Griffin, 19, made his major league debut Friday for the Pittsburgh Pirates, delivering a memorable performance in a 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles at PNC Park. The young shortstop showcased his skills with a double play, a hard-hit single, and aggressive baserunning, all within his first game.

Griffin’s debut marked a milestone for the franchise, as he became the youngest Pirate to record a hit in his first game since Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski in 1956. The player, who was drafted ninth overall in 2024, took the field with confidence, according to Pirates manager Derek Shelton.

He checked every box during his rapid ascent through the organization, including a .438 batting average in Triple-A Indianapolis in recent games. His debut was a full-circle moment, with the club honoring Mazeroski and acknowledging Griffin’s connection to the legendary player’s family.

Griffin credited Darren Mazeroski, Bill Mazeroski’s son, for believing in him and helping him reach the majors. His call-up came after a brief setback in spring training, where he hit .171 but adjusted quickly in Triple-A to earn his spot on the roster.

His debut came less than two weeks after being one of the last players cut during spring training. Griffin said he’s eager to stay with the team and hopes to be a long-term piece of Pittsburgh’s rebuilding effort, which has recently added several key players and generated optimism among fans.
