Sen. John Kennedy campaigns for Hyde-Smith at Mississippi fundraiser
U.S. Sen. John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, appeared at a fundraiser in Flowood last week to support Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith’s re-election bid. The event took place at the Sheraton Hotel and drew more than 400 supporters, according to Hyde-Smith’s campaign manager, Jake Monssen.
Monssen said the campaign aimed to raise more than $400,000 from the event. He praised Kennedy for bringing his trademark wit and a strong message on Hyde-Smith’s leadership in Washington.
Hyde-Smith has been a U.S. senator since 2018, when she was appointed by former Gov. Phil Bryant to fill the seat vacated by Thad Cochran. She later won a special election that year and secured a full six-year term in 2020. She is the first woman to represent Mississippi in Congress.
She is running against Democratic nominee Scott Colom, a district attorney in north Mississippi. Despite raising more money last quarter, Colom trails Hyde-Smith in cash on hand. Hyde-Smith benefits from incumbency and President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
The race also includes independent candidate Ty Pinkins. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 3.
