Sen. Wicker: Trump’s strike on Iran was ‘profound, deliberate and correct’
Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., said President Donald Trump’s decision to order military strikes against Iran was “profound, deliberate and correct,” Wicker wrote in a column published on Magnolia Tribune.
Wicker said Trump told the American people in a video announcing the campaign that the strikes were intended to protect the United States and prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Wicker quoted the president as saying, “We pray for every service member as they selflessly risk their lives to ensure that Americans and our children will never be threatened by a nuclear armed Iran,” and added that, as of his writing, six American soldiers had died in the fighting.
Wicker outlined what he described as four goals of the campaign. He said the president’s first goal was to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. The second, he wrote, was to destroy ballistic missiles and the facilities that support a weapons program. Third, Wicker said, U.S. forces are targeting Iran’s navy. Fourth, he said, the campaign seeks to stop the regime from arming, directing and funding terrorist networks in the region.
Wicker also described what he called early achievements. He wrote that U.S. forces and Israel had degraded Iran’s air defenses and missile systems, destroyed more than 20 Iranian vessels, and that Iran’s ballistic missile launches fell by nearly 90 percent within four days while one-way attack drone deployments dropped by more than 70 percent.
Wicker wrote that Trump acted while Iran was at a moment of historic weakness and defended the timing of the strikes. He said the Supreme Leader of Iran was killed on the first day of the operation and described the leader as allied with foreign autocrats. Wicker concluded that Trump used military force to protect the United States and make the world safer, writing that the decision was deliberate and justified.
