Severe Storms Possible Across Mississippi Monday Afternoon

JACKSON, Miss. — The National Weather Service and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency are warning residents across Mississippi to stay weather-aware Monday as the potential for severe storms develops during the afternoon and evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service office in Jackson, parts of the state are under a “slight risk” (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather today, while other areas remain under a “marginal risk” (Level 1 of 5).

Forecasters say storms are most likely to develop between noon and 9 p.m., with conditions capable of producing several types of severe weather.

Potential hazards include:

  • Hail up to golf ball size
  • Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph
  • Isolated tornadoes
  • Heavy thunderstorms across the state

Officials say that while the highest severe risk is concentrated in portions of north and central Mississippi, severe storms are possible anywhere in the state, and residents should remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to monitor forecasts throughout the day and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including weather radios, mobile alerts, and local media updates.

Emergency officials also encourage Mississippians to review their severe weather safety plans and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if warnings are issued.

Additional updates and safety information are available through MEMA and the National Weather Service throughout the day.
