Southern Miss hits two grand slams in 14-4 win over Alabama

No. 12 Southern Miss (7-1) defeated Alabama (6-2) 14-4 in a game shortened by the 10-run rule Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park, the schools said.

Alabama cut the deficit in the fourth when Luke Vaughn hit a two-run homer, according to Alabama. Southern Miss then produced a seven-run bottom of the fourth. A bases-loaded walk scored Seth Smith, a Matthew Russo single sent Higdon and Caleb Stelly home, and Kyle Morrison capped the rally with a grand slam over the right-field wall, Southern Miss said.

Southern Miss added two insurance runs in the seventh — a Davis Gillespie RBI single and a run on an Alabama fielding error that scored Ty Long — and the game ended under the 10-run rule, the team said. Coach Christian Ostrander used nine pitchers, and Bruce Littleton earned the win; Littleton struck out all three batters he faced in the top of the second, Southern Miss reported.

Southern Miss said Gillespie had four hits and two RBIs and Smith had three hits. Alabama used seven pitchers, and JT Blackwood took the loss after allowing six hits and five runs in two innings, according to Alabama. Vaughn finished with two hits and three RBIs for the Crimson Tide, the team said. Southern Miss travels to Louisiana Tech for a weekend series beginning Friday at 6 p.m., the school’s schedule shows.
