Southern Miss sweeps Louisiana Tech; Mississippi State wins two, Ole Miss falters
Southern Miss completed a three-game sweep of Louisiana Tech, winning 8-3 on Friday, 11-0 on Saturday and 6-2 on Sunday, the school said. The No. 12 Golden Eagles improved to 10-1 and got a three-run homer from Kyle Morrison in Friday’s win, a six-run fourth inning Saturday and a two-run shot by Joey Urban in the ninth on Sunday, the school said.
Southern Miss credited Kros Sivley (2-0) with Friday’s win after 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. Grayden Harris (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings Saturday with five strikeouts, and Camden Sunstrom (1-0) closed Sunday with two scoreless innings and two strikeouts, the school said.
Mississippi State went 2-1 in the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series, beating Arizona State 8-4 and Virginia Tech 15-8 before falling 8-7 in 10 innings to No. 1 UCLA, the school said. Bryce Chance and Gehrig Frei drove in early runs Friday, Ace Reece hit a homer Saturday and Reed Stallman delivered two homers Sunday for the Bulldogs, Mississippi State said.
Mississippi State credited Ryan McPherson (2-0) and Tomas Valincius (3-0) with weekend wins and Ben Davis (0-1) with the loss. The Bulldogs tied and took leads several times Sunday before UCLA rallied with a two-out homer in the ninth and a wild pitch plus a two-run triple in the 10th, the school said.
Ole Miss dropped two of three at the Bruce Bolt College Classic, losing 6-5 in extra innings to Baylor, beating Ohio State 8-0 and falling 9-2 to Coastal Carolina, the school said. The Rebels went 0-for-18 with runners in scoring position in the two losses, and the team highlighted Murray State transfer Dom Decker’s three home runs, Hunter Elliott’s career-high 11 strikeouts and a combined 16 strikeouts from Cade Townsend and Taylor Rabe, the school said.
Southern Miss will host Mississippi State Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Nicholls on Wednesday at 6 p.m., then North Alabama this weekend, the school said. Mississippi State will host Lipscomb this weekend after facing the Golden Eagles, and Ole Miss will host Memphis Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., North Alabama Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and Evansville for a weekend series, the schools said.
