Trump warns Iran that a ‘whole civilization will die tonight’ if no deal is reached
U.S. President Donald Trump issued a final warning Tuesday, saying a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran fails to meet his deadline to negotiate a deal that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The deadline is set for 8 p.m. Washington time, and Trump emphasized there will be no extensions, according to U.S. officials.
In response, Iran’s government called on young people to form human chains around power plants and other potential targets. Iranian officials also threatened reciprocal measures if the U.S. conducts military strikes, with Tehran’s U.N. envoy accusing Trump’s threats of inciting war crimes and possible genocide.
Prior to the deadline, U.S. forces carried out airstrikes on two bridges, a train station, and military infrastructure on Kharg Island, a key hub for Iranian oil. These strikes marked the second time American forces targeted the island since the conflict escalated, according to military sources and satellite analysis.
Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, but Iran has rejected the latest U.S. proposal. Trump has suggested reopening the Strait of Hormuz — through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes — is vital to avoid wider conflict, though he has also indicated willingness to deploy ground troops to seize Iranian oil if necessary.
Iran’s government reports that millions of its citizens, including military volunteers, are prepared to fight if needed. State media posted videos of crowds forming around power plants and bridges, and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned of expanding attacks across the Gulf region if the U.S. acts on its threats. Meanwhile, tensions with Israel and Saudi Arabia remain high, with recent strikes reported in both countries.
