Two arrested after burglary, vehicle break-in and arson reported on Highway 45 North
COLUMBUS, Miss. — Two men have been arrested in connection with a burglary investigation that also includes a reported vehicle break-in and an arson incident at a Columbus business, according to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies responded about 4:54 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026, to the area of 7293 Highway 45 North, where the two suspects were allegedly caught removing items from a storage building, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators later determined the same two suspects were captured on surveillance video earlier that day at about 2:30 a.m. breaking into a vehicle and then vandalizing Nate’s Body Shop at 7482 Highway 45 North, authorities said. The video allegedly shows the suspects breaking a window, setting an item on fire and throwing it inside the business, causing minor damage.
The suspects were identified as Jonathan Paul Shumaker, 35, and Darin Wayne Haynes Jr., 38. The sheriff’s office said Haynes was on probation at the time and was wearing an ankle monitor.
Both men are being held at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center while awaiting an initial court appearance, the sheriff’s office said.
The case remains under investigation. Shumaker and Haynes are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
