University of Mississippi Medical Center to resume full operations Monday after cyberattack

The University of Mississippi Medical Center announced Friday it will resume normal operations Monday following a cyberattack that disrupted its systems for more than a week.

The healthcare facility reported making significant progress in restoring systems affected by the attack that occurred Feb. 19. Clinics, which had been closed and relied on paper charts, will reopen with extended hours to accommodate patients, UMMC said in a statement.

UMMC officials noted that they now have access to patient records and that clinics statewide will return to regular schedules. They also said they will contact patients to reschedule canceled appointments.

Hospitals and emergency departments in Jackson, Grenada, Madison County, and Holmes County remain open. Patients with urgent needs, such as prescription refills or postoperative care, are advised to call the UMMC Triage Line at (601) 815-0000.

UMMC Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs Dr. LouAnn Woodward said this week that demands from those behind the attack had been received, though she did not specify their nature. The FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and other federal and state agencies are investigating the ransomware case. Some networks were compromised, and others were shut down as a precaution, officials said.

UMMC is one of Mississippi’s largest healthcare providers, operating seven hospitals, including the state’s largest in Jackson, along with 35 clinics and more than 200 telehealth sites across the state.
