7-month-old girl killed by stray bullet in Brooklyn, police say
A 7-month-old girl was killed Wednesday when a gunman on a moped opened fire on a Brooklyn street, the New York City Police Department said.
The NYPD identified the child as Kaori Patterson-Moore of Brooklyn. Police said the shooting happened about 1:20 p.m. at the intersection of Moore Street and Humboldt Street, where several adults and children were gathered. The girl was struck by a stray bullet and was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.
Police said two people on a moped approached the intersection and the passenger fired multiple times. The moped sped away but crashed into an oncoming car two blocks away, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Both riders fell off the vehicle; one was injured, taken to a hospital and is in custody in connection with an unrelated investigation, police said. Investigators believe he fits the description of the alleged shooter based on his clothing and appearance. The second rider fled and remained at large Wednesday evening.
The NYPD said no gun has been recovered at the scene, but two shell casings were found. Police said the shooting is believed to be gang-related and that the child was an unintended victim. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, “There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling right now. A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant.” Tisch called the killing “a terrible day in our city” and said investigators reviewed neighborhood security cameras and tracked the moped’s movement following the shooting.
Police asked anyone with information to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips also can be submitted online or on X @NYPDTips, police said. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
