A-10 Warthog Takes On New Maritime Role in Iran Conflict

The A-10 Warthog has been assigned a new maritime mission targeting boats in the conflict involving Iran, potentially prolonging its operational life. Despite efforts by the U.S. Air Force to phase out the aircraft, Congress has blocked reductions in its fleet, citing its unique capabilities.

According to a Pentagon briefing last month, the A-10 is actively involved in operations along Iran’s southern coast, including targeting Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz. Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the aircraft is hunting and destroying fast attack watercraft in the region.

During the briefing on March 19, Caine said the A-10 is engaging in countering maritime threats alongside AH-64 Apache helicopters and allied forces. The military continues to target naval assets, including vessels, mine storage facilities, and ammunition depots, in an effort to disrupt Iran’s maritime capabilities.

The deployment of the A-10 in this role has intensified debate over the aircraft’s future. Originally designed during the Cold War as a tank-killer, the plane is now being used for maritime interdiction and coastal defense. The U.S. has about 280 A-10s in service, with a requirement to keep at least 103 aircraft through fiscal 2026, according to the National Defense Authorization Act.

The use of the A-10, which is slower and less stealthy than newer aircraft, highlights its long loiter time and visual targeting advantages. The aircraft’s deployment comes amid heightened tensions with Iran and ongoing disputes over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route. The conflict has also spurred broader political debates over the future of the aging fleet.
