Abbott says Texas is ‘seriously’ evaluating possible Iranian sleeper cells

Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, said Monday that the possibility of Iranian “sleeper cells” in Texas is being “seriously” evaluated.

Federal authorities are investigating a Sunday shooting in Austin, Abbott said.

Sleeper cells are foreign actors who live under the radar until called on to carry out a mission or attack.

Abbott made the comments as state and federal officials continue their inquiries into the incident in Austin, according to his statement.
