Bianco says ‘Democrat policy is indefensible’ as polls show GOP leading California governor race
Recent polling cited by the New York Post shows Republican candidates leading California’s gubernatorial field, and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told Fox News Digital that Democratic policy in the state is “indefensible.”
The Post reported that some Democrats privately warned a crowded and “uninspiring” field could split votes under the state’s top-two primary system, allowing two Republicans to advance to the November ballot. One Democratic lawmaker described the situation as a “sh**show,” the Post reported, and another faulted party leadership for not consolidating the field.
Under California’s top-two primary, only the two highest vote-getters, regardless of party, advance to the general election. Polling cited by the Post showed former Fox host Steve Hilton leading with 17%, followed by Bianco and Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., at 14% each, former Rep. Katie Porter at 12% and Tom Steyer at 9%.
The concern emerged as Democrats gathered in San Francisco for their state party convention, where the Post said Nancy Pelosi and gubernatorial hopefuls Swalwell and Porter spoke at the Moscone Center. Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa dismissed the idea that two Republicans could advance, telling the Post, “At the end of the day, everybody has a right to run. The notion that two Republicans can win [the primary] is poppycock.”
Bianco disputed that assessment in remarks to Fox News Digital, saying the situation reflects “decades of complete Democrat failure” and a “lack of a Democrat policy” that has helped California. He added, “Two Republicans have been ahead in the polls for the last six months” and said voters want “honesty, integrity, transparency, and leadership.” The California Democratic Party did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment, and the Post said it remains unclear which of the eight Democratic gubernatorial candidates will leave the convention with the party’s backing.
