Burglary prompts murder probe in Indiana after man’s sudden death; police cite root beer float

Local police say a burglary at the home of Harold Allen in Freetown, Indiana, has prompted a murder investigation and pointed investigators to an unusual alleged weapon: a root beer float.

Allen died suddenly at his home, and authorities said no one initially suspected anything out of the ordinary.

Nine months after his death, police said, a burglary at the house led investigators to reexamine the circumstances surrounding Allen’s death.

Police opened a murder probe after the burglary, and they said the investigation has identified a root beer float as central to the alleged plot. Authorities did not provide further details.
