DHS says undocumented immigrant charged after 124 mph Ohio chase that killed pregnant teen

The Department of Homeland Security said Saturday it has lodged an immigration detainer against Tarsem Singh, an Indian national recently indicted on vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide charges in a Feb. 16 high-speed chase that officials say killed a pregnant 17-year-old and her unborn child. Singh is being held on $1 million bond, DHS said, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged an arrest detainer with Ohio authorities.

Darke County Sheriff’s Office officials told investigators the pursuit began after a deputy noticed an SUV driving about 25 mph over the speed limit. The deputy paced the vehicle at 100 mph, activated emergency lights to make a traffic stop and said the SUV then fled, driving roughly 5 miles at speeds that reached 124 mph before crashing into an eastbound vehicle on a curve, the sheriff’s office said.

The deputy notified dispatch and checked for injuries, and local outlet WDTN reported the deputy found 17-year-old Ashlee Holmes, a passenger in Singh’s vehicle, dead after being ejected. Singh was taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital, and the female driver of the eastbound vehicle was conscious and alert and taken to Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind., the sheriff’s office said. Officials said the pursuit lasted less than three minutes. It was unclear why Holmes was in Singh’s vehicle.

DHS acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement, “This is yet another tragic reminder of why illegal aliens should not be driving cars on America’s roads. A 17-year-old woman and her unborn child are now dead as a result of this illegal alien’s reckless actions.” DHS said Singh allegedly entered the United States in February 2017 through the southern border in California, was arrested and later ordered released on bond by a judge. Bis said the newly filed ICE detainer was lodged to ensure he is “never released and allowed back behind the wheel to put more innocent lives at risk.”
