Fans boo N.J. Gov. Sherrill at Devils game honoring Jack Hughes

Fans at the Prudential Center booed Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Wednesday as she appeared to welcome U.S. Olympic star Jack Hughes and other returning Olympians, Fox News reported.

The ceremony preceded the New Jersey Devils’ game against the Buffalo Sabres and honored the team’s Olympians from 2026, including players who represented other countries, according to Fox News. Hughes received the warmest reception, with fans chanting “U-S-A!” as he addressed the crowd and praised both the men’s and women’s teams for winning gold.

Hughes told the crowd, “I’m so proud and I’m so happy that the men’s and women’s USA hockey teams brought gold medals back to the United States of America,” Fox News quoted. The outlet reported Hughes appeared emotional as he thanked fans for their support.

Sherrill posted photos of herself with Hughes and other players on social media, and critics pointed to the loud boos at the arena, Fox News said. Posts on X included comments such as, “You managed to somehow get booed loudly during the most festive thing at the Rock ever,” and “Didn’t everyone boo you?”

The episode comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Sherrill. Fox News recounted that she faced criticism after details from her 2025 Naval Academy campaign surfaced and quoted Sherrill saying she “didn’t turn in some of my classmates, so I didn’t walk but graduated and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy, serving for nearly ten years with the highest level of distinction and honor.” The Justice Department this week filed a lawsuit against New Jersey and Sherrill, alleging the state expanded sanctuary policies and obstructed federal immigration enforcement through a recent executive order, the DOJ filing says, according to Fox News.
