France bans U.S. ambassador from direct access to government officials

France’s foreign minister has formally requested that U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner be restricted from direct contact with members of the French government, according to a diplomatic source.

Kushner did not attend a scheduled meeting Monday, which was to discuss comments made by the Trump administration regarding the death of a far-right activist who was beaten to death.

The move comes amid diplomatic tensions following Kushner’s absence from the meeting, which was deemed significant by French officials. The embassy has not issued a public statement on the matter.

The incident highlights ongoing diplomatic sensitivities between France and the United States concerning political statements and diplomatic protocol.
