Gavin Newsom’s spokesperson tells reporter to ‘f— off’ when asked for dyslexia records
A spokesperson for California Gov. Gavin Newsom responded with profanity when asked for records confirming the governor’s dyslexia diagnosis, according to reports Monday.
The incident occurred after Newsom made comments over the weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, where he referenced his reading disability. Newsom has been open about his dyslexia since at least 2004, when he was mayor of San Francisco.
Newsom’s communications director, Izzy Gardon, reportedly told a reporter from RealClearPolitics, Susan Crabtree, to “f— off” when she requested proof of the governor’s diagnosis. Crabtree shared a screenshot of the exchange on X, formerly Twitter.
When asked whether Gardon’s response reflected Newsom’s own stance, Gardon stated that the governor “literally has no idea who Susan is.” Crabtree criticized the response, saying, “Californians and all Americans deserve real answers about Newsom’s claims, not lazy, expletive-laced deflections.”
Newsom, a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, also drew criticism over comments made during a book tour in Atlanta. Critics called his remarks, in which he compared himself to others by mentioning his SAT score and reading difficulties, racially insensitive. Newsom told Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who is Black, that he is “like you” and “not trying to offend anyone,” but some questioned whether his comments were appropriate or racially charged. Newsom and his supporters deny allegations of racism.
