Hochul eases New York liquor laws for U.S.-Canada hockey game

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Saturday that she has directed the State Liquor Authority to temporarily suspend certain liquor laws in some parts of the state. The move is intended to allow bars and restaurants to open early for the U.S. men’s hockey team’s gold medal game against Canada on Sunday.

The suspension will be in effect between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, according to Hochul’s office. The action applies to specific regions where officials have approved the early openings, though details on those areas have not been specified.

Hochul’s office said the measure aims to support local businesses and accommodate fans eager to watch the game. The decision follows the state’s standard liquor laws, which typically restrict alcohol sales and service during certain hours on Sundays.

The United States and Canada are set to face off in the gold medal game, a highly anticipated matchup in the men’s hockey tournament. The game is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
