Iran tells IMO it will allow ‘non-hostile vessels’ through Strait of Hormuz

Iranian leaders told the International Maritime Organization in a Tuesday letter that “non-hostile vessels” would be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, the letter said.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow chokepoint linking the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil each day, according to international shipping data.

The letter to the IMO did not detail procedures for identifying or inspecting vessels, the letter said. It also did not specify timelines for implementation, according to the correspondence.

International shipping and energy markets closely watch statements about the strait because of its importance to global oil flows, the IMO has said in past reports.
