Khamenei’s death opens uncertain chapter for Iran, analysts say

Iran entered a new chapter Saturday after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed, abruptly ending more than three decades of authoritarian rule and setting in motion a leadership transition the regime has long prepared, the original report said.

A senior Arab diplomat told The Times of Israel that Khamenei’s demise is a “massive blow” but that Tehran anticipated the possibility and had taken steps to withstand such a scenario. The diplomat, speaking after U.S. and Israeli strikes across the country, said “mere survival, at this point, would be considered a victory,” according to the outlet.

A recent report from the Council on Foreign Relations outlined three broad trajectories for a post-Khamenei Iran: managed regime continuity, an overt or creeping military takeover, or systemic collapse. The CFR cautioned that a change at the top would not necessarily bring immediate political reform because power is deeply institutionalized within clerical elites and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The CFR said a likely continuity scenario could produce what it described as “Khamenei-ism without Khamenei,” with a successor from within the regime preserving the ideological framework and relying on established security institutions to maintain stability.

Jason Brodsky, policy director of United Against Nuclear Iran, told Fox News Digital that the constitution assigns succession to the Assembly of Experts and that, in the interim, an interim leadership council would include the president, the chief justice and a Guardian Council member picked by the Expediency Council. Brodsky added that the IRGC is a key stakeholder and will heavily influence the outcome. A February report by UANI described the Office of the Supreme Leader as a “sprawling parallel state” and the regime’s “hidden nerve center,” saying that institutionally entrenched control will continue to shape Iran’s future long after Khamenei’s departure.
