Leavitt says Trump named her White House press secretary in brief post-election call

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump informed her by phone that she would be the administration’s press secretary in a brief, post-election call she described as “the most anti-climatic thing ever.” Leavitt said this at a Turning Point USA event at George Washington University on Thursday evening.

Leavitt said the call came about a week after the election while she and Trump were “chit chatting” about something else. She quoted Trump as saying, “Oh, by the way, you know, you’re going to be the White House press secretary, right?” and said she replied, “Oh, okay.”

Leavitt said Trump then asked her about “that other thing” and what they should say, and that was how she learned she had the job. “That was it. That’s how I got the job,” she said, adding there was “no pomp and circumstance” and calling the exchange “true Donald Trump fashion.”

Leavitt told the audience she had worked on Trump’s 2024 campaign after losing a congressional race in New Hampshire and was serving as a spokesperson before being tapped for the White House role following the election.

She also said she gave birth to her son in July 2024 and is currently nine months pregnant with a daughter, remarks she made at the event.
