Man found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2023 Seattle shooting
A King County court found Cordell Goosby not guilty by reason of insanity in the June 13, 2023, shooting that killed 34-year-old Eina Kwon and her unborn child and wounded her husband, prosecutors and court records show. Goosby had been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder, court records show.
Prosecutors wrote in court papers that Eina and her husband, Sung Kwon, were stopped at a red light about 11:15 a.m. on June 13, 2023, as they were on their way to work at their Japanese restaurant, Aburiya Bento House. Prosecutors wrote that Goosby sprinted to the driver’s side window of their white Tesla with a gun raised and “fired a gun in the victim’s car window, striking the victims inside the car. After firing all the bullets he had in the gun into the victims’ car, he turned and ran from the scene.”
Officers later located Goosby, who put his hands in the air and said, “I did it! I did it!”, according to court documents. Then-Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell described the broad daylight shooting as an “unimaginable tragedy,” court records show.
Officials said Goosby was prohibited from owning a firearm because of a criminal record in Illinois and allegedly used a stolen gun in the shooting. The details were included in charging documents and statements from law enforcement, officials said.
Fox 13 reported that the King County court system said a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity ruling means the defendant admits committing the crimes and agrees to commitment in a state psychiatric hospital. The station reported that experts for both the defense and prosecution evaluated Goosby and determined he was legally insane at the time of the shooting, and that any future release would require approval from multiple state and court entities.
