Rep. Valerie Foushee held a narrow lead over challenger Nida Allam in North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District, and the race was likely headed to a recount, according to official results.

Initial tabulations left the contest too close to call, election officials said. The margin between the candidates was small enough that a recount appeared probable.

Foushee is the Democratic incumbent in the district. Allam challenged her for the seat.
