Newsom says ‘fate’ will decide if he faces Harris in 2028 primary
Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., said Sunday that “fate” will decide whether he and former Vice President Kamala Harris face off in a 2028 Democratic presidential primary, during an interview on CNN while promoting his memoir “Young Man in a Hurry.”
CNN’s Dana Bash asked Newsom on “State of the Union” whether his and Harris’ “parallel careers” could “intersect and collide.” Newsom joked about geography, saying, “Well, I’m San Francisco now. She’s [Los Angeles]. So we’re a little… there’s a little distance between the two of us.”
Asked directly about running for president in 2028, Newsom said, “That’s… fate will determine that. And I’ve never gotten in the way of her ambition ever. I haven’t. And I don’t imagine I would in the future,” according to the interview. He also said the book emphasizes “controlling what you control and taking responsibility for what you control.”
Both Harris and Newsom have been mentioned as possible contenders for the 2028 Democratic nomination, though neither has officially declared a campaign, according to reporting. Fox News Digital reached out to Harris’ office for comment, the outlet said.
A University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll released Thursday found former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg atop a list of potential 2028 Democratic contenders, with Newsom and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York tied at 15 percent and Harris and Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona each at 10 percent, the poll showed.
