NYC elections worker says he won’t report noncitizen registrants, undercover video shows
An undercover video released by Muckraker shows a New York City Board of Elections worker telling a reporter who posed as a noncitizen that he would accept and submit voter registration applications and would not report applicants to authorities, the footage shows.
The worker warned the reporter that the application form asks about citizenship and that there could be legal consequences, saying, “If you want to fill it out, fill it out. … If it comes back to you, it comes back to you.” He also told the reporter, “But we accept anything that comes over the counter,” and, “That’s not my job to report anyone. My job is just to collect the application and submit it to the department,” the video shows, according to Muckraker.
New York state law prohibits noncitizens from registering to vote. A proposal to allow noncitizen voting in New York City municipal elections was ruled unconstitutional last year, according to court rulings cited at the time.
