NYC police officer assigned to Mayor Mamdani’s security suspended after off-duty shooting

A New York City police officer assigned to security at Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s residence and City Hall has been suspended after authorities said he shot a man in the head while off duty.

The shooting happened Monday around 9 p.m. in the Bronx after the officer interacted with several men about a stolen car, according to the NYPD. The officer has not been publicly identified and has not been arrested or charged as of Thursday morning, police said. He has been suspended without pay.

The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is investigating the incident, a department spokesperson told The Associated Press. The victim, identified only as a 30-year-old man, remains hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

Authorities did not specify whether the officer fired his weapon intentionally or accidentally. A manager at a nearby bar reported that a window was struck and cracked by gunfire during the incident, though no one inside was injured. Ada Gomez, the bar’s manager, told The AP, “Imagine if someone was sitting in that window at that time.”

Mamdani’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The city’s official mayoral residence is Gracie Mansion, located in Manhattan’s Yorkville neighborhood.

The NYPD continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which has drawn attention due to the officer’s security role for the mayor.
