Rep. Tony Gonzales to not seek re-election amid House Ethics probe into affair
Rep. Tony Gonzales, a Texas Republican, said Thursday he will not seek re-election amid a House Ethics Committee investigation into an affair he admitted to having with a former staffer.
Gonzales, a married father of six, publicly disclosed the affair Wednesday, a day after winning a GOP primary runoff for his congressional district. In a statement, he reflected on his service, citing his military background and efforts on issues like the border crisis and school shootings in Texas.
“At 18, I swore an oath to defend our nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” Gonzales said. “During my 20 years in the military and three terms in Congress, I have fought for that cause with absolute dedication.”
He added that after deep reflection and with his family’s support, he decided not to seek re-election but would complete his current term. Gonzales emphasized his commitment to his constituents during the remainder of his time in office.
The House Ethics Committee launched an investigation Wednesday to determine if Gonzales engaged in sexual misconduct with a female staff member or exchanged favors or privileges as a result. Gonzales revealed the affair during an appearance on a conservative talk radio show.
