Russell Wilson calls Sean Payton ‘classless’ in resurfaced comments

Russell Wilson has doubled down on his criticism of New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, calling him “classless” in comments that resurfaced recently. Wilson, who played one season with the Denver Broncos under Payton, made the remarks during a podcast interview recorded before last month’s Super Bowl.

In the interview on the “Bussin’ With the Boys” podcast, Wilson said he felt slighted by Payton’s previous comments. “I got a lot of respect for him as a play-caller, but to take a shot, I don’t like. I don’t think it’s necessary,” Wilson said. “Especially when I’m not even on your own team anymore. There’s a point where you have to, I’ve realized, I’ve stayed quiet for so long. There’s a time and a place.”

Wilson, who won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks, also emphasized his competitiveness. “I know who I am as a competitor, as a warrior, as a champion. I’ve beaten Sean before,” he said. “Just don’t disrespect me.”

The quarterback’s comments come after a challenging 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by a brief stint with the New York Giants, where he was relegated to backup after three games. Rookie Jaxson Dart initially started for the Giants but was sidelined by injury, leading to Jameis Winston stepping in briefly.

Payton, speaking about the Giants’ offense after Dart’s promising performance against the Broncos, said Dart provided a “spark.” The coach also remarked that the team might have faced less difficulty if Wilson had been under center. “Classless … but not surprised,” Wilson responded on social media, referencing Payton’s comments about Dart and the Broncos.

Despite setbacks, Wilson remains optimistic about his future, expressing a desire to continue playing into 2026. “I want to play a few more years for sure,” he said. “I think the game is different now. The rules help quarterbacks live longer. I feel healthy and great, and more than anything, I love the game and the process.”
