Shedeur Sanders to wear No. 2 for Browns in 2026 season
Shedeur Sanders will wear No. 2 for the Cleveland Browns in the upcoming 2026 season, the team announced on social media. Sanders, who wore No. 12 last season, is returning to his college number after wide receiver DeAndre Carter, who previously wore No. 2, is no longer on the roster.
Sanders made the jersey switch after completing his first NFL season, during which he started seven games and posted a 3-4 record as the Browns’ quarterback. He initially served in a backup role behind veteran Joe Flacco, who was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals after the team’s injury-plagued start. Sanders then took over as the starter following injuries and struggles of Dillon Gabriel, who was drafted ahead of him in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Browns have yet to name a starting quarterback for the 2026 season, with head coach Todd Monken stating at the NFL owners meeting that the team has not reached a decision. Deshaun Watson, who has had a tumultuous tenure with Cleveland, remains on the roster, and Gabriel is healthy again. Sanders is aware he will need to prove himself anew under the team’s new coaching staff, which includes Monken, who was hired this offseason.
Despite limited playing time, Sanders already has a Pro Bowl appearance on his resume. He aims to build on his momentum from last year, now with a new jersey number and the challenge of competing for the starting role in an evolving Browns roster.
