Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton won Illinois’ marquee Democratic Senate primary Tuesday, defeating two House lawmakers, official results showed.
The victory, observers said, all but ensures she will succeed Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) in the upper chamber.
Voters headed to the polls in contests that underscored divisions within the state Democratic Party, drew significant outside spending and advanced the comeback bid of a former lawmaker, election observers said.
Campaign officials and outside groups reported heavy spending in several races, and strategists said Stratton’s win will shape the party’s prospects in the fall general election, according to analysts.
