Suspect in New Hampshire officer shooting killed in police gunbattle

A suspect wanted for shooting a police officer and family members in Raymond, New Hampshire, was killed in a gunfight with law enforcement Sunday, according to officials.

Matthew J. Masse, 38, reportedly opened fire on relatives and responding officers Saturday afternoon, prompting a large-scale manhunt that included road closures and a shelter-in-place order, the state Attorney General’s Office said.

Authorities said Masse exchanged gunfire with officers using a rifle. When officers approached his location, they found him deceased. An autopsy is scheduled for early this week to determine the cause and manner of death.

The incident began shortly after 1:30 p.m., when Masse allegedly shot his relatives with a long gun and then fired at police. A Nottingham Police Department officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Masse, described as a middle-aged white male standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 202 pounds, had active felony warrants related to attempted arson at his family’s home from Thursday. After the shootings, he fled into a wooded area, prompting a large search involving K-9 units and multiple agencies.

Authorities located Masse around 10:06 p.m. near Ham Road, where a confrontation led to the exchange of gunfire. He was found dead at the scene, with his long gun nearby. No other injuries were reported, and officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Names of the officers involved are being withheld pending interviews, per protocol.
