Thompson projected to win Mississippi Democratic primary

Decision Desk HQ projected that Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., won the Democratic primary for Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District, fending off a long-shot challenge from Evan Turnage, the organization said.

Turnage, 34, is an antitrust lawyer who ran an insurgent campaign against the incumbent, Decision Desk HQ reported.

Thompson, 78, is a civil rights leader who has represented the district for more than 30 years. He has held the seat since the early 1990s.

The projection by Decision Desk HQ means Thompson is expected to be the Democratic nominee and will appear on the ballot in the Nov. general election, the outlet said.
