Venezuela signs amnesty law that could free hundreds detained for political reasons
Venezuela’s acting president has signed an amnesty bill into law that could lead to the release of politicians, activists, lawyers and others detained for political reasons, Venezuelan officials said.
Officials said the measure names broad categories of people who could benefit but gave few details about who will qualify or how the process will work.
Authorities did not immediately provide an estimate of how many people might be eligible for release or a timetable for implementing the law, officials said.
Reactions from opposition groups, international organizations and other governments were not immediately available, officials said.
