Woman Says Suspected Meteorite Struck Houston-Area Home After Loud Blast

Hours after a loud blast rattled homes across the Houston area on Saturday, a woman told FOX 26 that a suspected meteorite crashed through her roof, leaving a hole in the ceiling and a football-sized rock, according to the Ponderosa Fire Department.

The Brenham Fire Department said it was dispatched to reports of a possible explosion near Highway 50 but found nothing on scene. The department said several witnesses saw a "green flash fall from the sky, black smoke, and heard a loud ‘boom.’"

Sherrie James contacted FOX 26 and the Ponderosa Fire Department after the blast, and provided photos showing a football-sized, black rock that appeared to have broken off a larger mass, the station reported. The Ponderosa department told FOX 26 that because there was no nearby construction or trees, the rock was likely part of the alleged meteor.

The American Meteor Society documented what it called a "fireball event" over Texas after receiving more than 100 reports. Observers reported the phenomenon lasted between 1.5 seconds and 7.5 seconds, the society said, though the event has not yet been validated by experts.

No other reports of damage were confirmed, officials said. Fire officials also noted that other sources suggested the noise could have been caused by a "possible meteor."
